With the sustained national economic development, China is experiencing the construction peak at present. However, the historical and cultural value of the historical district has been destroyed by the rapid construction. The protection and renovation of the historical district has been a very urgent problem which the local government is facing. For a long time, lots of scholars devote themselves to the study and practice of historical district’s protecting and renovation. Many successful projects are carried out as well. However, many historical districts have been destroyed by easy reproducing of current successful examples. A renovation strategy which is suitable for one historical district might be inappropriate for other districts because every historical district has its own characteristic. Therefore each historical district should have its own protection and renovation strategy. The historical district of the town god’s temple in Xi‘an is a special historical district in Xi’an. Since the Xi’an town god’s temple has been the only existing Town God’s Temples in china. With the increase of the population, deterioration of the environment, many historical sites are destroyed in the Xi’an town god’s temple. The protection of the temple and renovation of the district have become an urgent problem for the local government.
This study begins with the analysis of different historical district’s characteristics to study methodology of protection and renovation strategy as a novel angel. This research integrates Architecture, Urban planning, Typology, Semiotics, Economics, Management and so on to investigate the unique physical and cultural characteristics of Xi’an town god’s temple historical district and put forward protection and renovation strategy and feasible planning.
Based on the survey result of this typical historic district, analysis has been made from the following aspects: environment, history, land use, population, construction and space. And then with the application of SWOT theory, analysis of the historical district’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges are also studied. Simultaneously, the target, principle and methodology of protection and renovation strategy have been proposed. Based on the comparison between Xi’an town god’s temple historical district and other historical districts, the unique characteristics of this historical district are extracted in this research. Integrated with the reality of construction, the planning strategies of Xi’an town god’s temple historical district are brought forward, and the characteristics of this planning are commented.
The research is not only very meaningful for the renovation and development of Xi’an town god’s temple historical district, but also valuable for the research of the only existing Town God’s Temples in china.
