Liquid level is a common industrial process control object, with time delay, nonlinear, uncertainty and other typical characteristics of process control system. With the industrial process control object becoming more and more complicated and the increasing performance requirements of people, for the complex process control object, it’s difficult to meet the desired effect only using the traditional PID controller. In this paper, intelligent PID control strategy based on particle swarm optimization(PSO) is proposed.Using it to the water tank liquid level control system, we achieve good control effect. In order to control the system better, we first establish the mathematical model of the system by the material balance.Step response curve method and prediction error method are used to determination of the parameters of the model. Second, to the characteristics of tank model, intelligent PID control strategy is proposed based on the error. The algorithm uses different control rules based on different errors, by using PSO algorithm to optimize the controller parameters. Simulation results show that intelligent PID controller optimized by PSO can be easily applied to the water tank systems, have no over-shoot, the dynamic performance is relatively stable, do not rely on mathematical models, and its performance is also better than the traditional PID controller.Finally, the intelligent PID controller optimized by PSO is applied to the advanced process control system experiment device type of THJ-3. By composing the ladder program of S7-200, we achieve the intelligent PID controller algorithm. Experimental results show that the intelligent PID controller for liquid level control system has good static and dynamic characteristics of indicators.
