The art of opera is one of the widely accepted arts in the ancient Chinese art system, which has great and profound influence on Chinese spiritual life and its culture- psychology structure. However, during the present period of social and economical transformation, one fact that we have to admit is that the art of opera, especially Ch’in Opera is declining. And it deserves highly attention from both scholars and audiences.As one of the Chinese local plays, Ch’in Opera, among Chinese four arias, is the oldest, richest and hugest one. And it is called “the living fossil of Chinese ancient opera” as well as “the ancestor of Bangzi Opera”. It is broadly sung in north-west China and become the greatest local plays in these regions. From its naissance to the contemporary period, Ch’in Opera became the fittest and the most direct fashion for the people in north-west China to catharsis and express their pang. The main reason is that its rhythm is bold and unconstrained, solemn and stirring. Its aria is dolorous and melting and its tune is loud and sonorous. Thus, Ch’in Opera, in north-west China, has won universal praise and attracted people of various ages. People there loved it crazily generation by generation. But in the contemporary era, Ch’in Opera declined, the reason is the exact topic of this dissertation.The innovation point of this dissertation is that it starts with reviewing the evolved tendency of Chinese ancient culture. This dissertation discusses the origin, the evolution and the prosperity of Ch’in Opera analyzes the contemporary plight and perplexity from the plight of Ch’in Opera explores the failure and shortage of former innovation of Ch’in Opera then theoretically probes into how to revive Ch’in Opera by offering several corresponding advices both in theory and practice. First, probe from the economical perspective of naissance of Ch’in Opera based on analyzing the relation between the characteristics of districts and the conventional productive mode of Chinese agriculture as well as agricultural civilization Then from the perspective of the background of society and culture, this dissertation discusses some issues related to the origin and the national characteristics of Ch’in Opera.Second, this dissertation discusses the contemporary plight of Ch’in Opera and the deep-seated reason from five aspects: the disaccord between the Ch’in Opera language and the contemporary social language the conflict between the theme of Ch’in Opera and the contemporary social concept, as well as the changes of ideology the clash between fast-paced contemporary life style and patterned performance of Ch’in Opera the unfitness between too many demands to the Ch’in Opera performance and the contemporary cultural transmission the collision between the changed audience group of Ch’in Opera and the popularization of Ch’in Opera.Third, this dissertation discusses how to revive and develop Ch’in Opera from four aspects: how to define the regional and cultural property of Ch’in Opera how could Ch’in Opera catch up with the time the crisis and the rebirth of Ch’in Opera the consideration of Ch’in Opera’s reform and its development.The conclusion of this dissertation is helpful to a deeper understanding of how the archaic Ch’in Opera inheriting the excellent tradition of Chinese opera culture, how the Ch’in Opera casting off the practical plight at present time, and how to think and explore the future of Ch’in Opera.
